Hello! sorry if this isn't totally on topic, but i have a friend graduating from med school this week, and i'm looking for gift ideas. There are 5 of us going in together on a gift, so it can be something nice/semi-expensive.

What was/would have been useful at the beginning of your residency??

thanks!

With 2 internships (almost!) under my belt, I can honestly say that a really nice gift would come around mid-year. And it'd be things to help your friend live their life outside of the hospital. What field is your friend going in to?

Nice things (depending on how much you're willing to spend and how many times you're willing to spend it):
1) House cleaning service--cleaning the toilet does not happen when you work >80 hours a week
2) A meal service. Several of the other residents and I use a service like Cena to make meals easy. Because grocery shopping and cooking does not happen during residency.
3) A nice coffee maker, one with a timer on it
4) Alcohol is always good

See, YOU are who I need to talk to sweet_tea... I am about to start PGY1 in IM and am so DESPERATELY thinking about swtiching to ER next year... anyway...

As far as gifts. I agree, think long and hard about what their hobbies are. Do they like to hike? Get them a GPS. Do they like to Bike? How about a tricked out tool set. Do they like movies? Coffee? .. how about $100 each on a movie card and a starbucks card? (it sounds like your budget might be in the $200 range)

Sweet tea is right that you get tired of... medical stuff - besides - medical stuff is tax deductible now ! (if you itemize) Woot! lol.

Nerd alert!
I say high tech Stethoscope!
Or something like a Doppler (For prenatal care, or to detect pulses or ABIs)
Or lol..a bladder scan..
man, I'm just listing things I want. heh.

he already has a good stethoscope, but that would have been a good idea.

We decided to go with a grind&brew coffee pot, some gormet coffee and a nice thermos (he apparently had one and loved it, but lost it).

thanks for all the ideas!!
